My Magical Hair
by Nina Reid
My Magical Hair was forged from the fire of trying to encourage a positive attitude toward the kinks and coils of our sunshine Grayce’s hair. I wanted a book I could sit down and read to her that would help her to see the beauty and versatility of her hair - instead of the pain of combing and styling it.
As a black woman our hair is a huge part of our identity and for our children this begins as soon as she gets her first ponytail style with beads or barrettes. Culturally, she begins to see who she is in relation to those around her. This experience should be encouraged. My Magical Hair is the first of three part series I plan to write about the black girl’s natural hair journey. It is truly magical. TRB
